The laboratory uses mass spectrometry, which identifies a substance by its molecular mass rather than inferring it from a chemical reaction, so a positive result is reliable and is reported with the measured concentration. Accuracy of timing is a separate question: hair does not all grow at exactly the same rate — individual follicles differ and some are resting at any given time, which is the same reason a haircut never grows out perfectly evenly. A length of hair therefore corresponds to an approximate period rather than a specific date. The chemistry is precise; the calendar is approximate.

Usually not. The laboratory needs about 120 strands, roughly the thickness of a shoelace tip, and it is taken as several small sections from the crown rather than one visible chunk, positioned so the surrounding hair falls over the cut. The crown is chosen partly for this reason — it gives the most accurate timeline and is the easiest place to keep a cut out of sight. On hair longer than a few centimetres the cut is generally not noticeable. On very short hair, around 1 to 2 cm, there is less to work with, so the practitioner will show you what is achievable before starting.

Hair drug, alcohol and steroid test results are issued within 5 to 7 business days of the laboratory receiving the sample. Results arrive as a certificate of analysis listing each substance on the panel and the concentration of anything detected. An optional written forensic interpretation, prepared separately by an independent forensic toxicologist, takes 10 to 14 business days.
