1. HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT

Arrival:
Please arrive 10 minutes early to complete paperwork.

What to Bring:

  • Reading glasses (if needed)

  • Valid photo ID (e.g., driver’s licence or passport)

Payment Information:

  • Payment is required on the day. We accept cash, credit/debit cards, and direct deposits.

  • If someone else is paying, please provide their full name, email address, and phone number.

  • If Legal Aid is responsible for payment, we also require the Legal Aid Grant Number in addition to the above details (see below for more information).

  • Note: A $150 collection fee applies if payment is not made on the day, with any remaining balance to be paid later.

Legal Considerations:

Please review any court orders outlining the testing period and test type (e.g., drugs, alcohol, or steroids), so you are clear on what has been requested or ordered by the court (if applicable). For the best preparation, consult your solicitor for legal advice before your appointment, as we cannot interpret court documents or provide legal advice.

2. CALCULATE YOUR TIME-LINE BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT

When calculating your timelines, consider the hair growth rate of approximately 1 cm per month, plus an additional 14 days for the hair to grow above the skin. For example, if you’re testing for the past 3 months, calculate your timeline as 3 months + 2 weeks.

It’s always safer to overestimate rather than underestimate, as hair follicles grow at varying rates—some faster, some slower, and others may remain dormant for a period. Adding a buffer between the last exposure and testing improves the chances of a negative result but does not guarantee it.

3. FORENSIC EXPERT PHONE  CONSULTATION (IF NEEDED)

  • Preparation: Email your reports to us before the consultation.
  • Payment: Prepayment is required to confirm your booking with the forensic toxicologist.

COMMON FAQs

Q: Can I reschedule or cancel my appointment?

Yes, you can. Simply call us on (03) 9380 5434 or use our contact page to request changes.

Please note: our online booking system is for making new appointments only — it cannot process cancellations.

If you’d like to reschedule, feel free to book a new time online and let us know so we can cancel your original appointment.

Q: What is a Legal Aid Grant Number?

A Legal Aid Grant Number (also known as a Service Number or File Reference Number) is a unique identifier assigned to your legal aid case from Legal Aid Victoria (P: 1300 792 387) once your application for assistance has been approved. This number is essential for tracking your case, communicating with your lawyer, and managing any correspondence or payments related to your legal aid. If you’re required to make a financial contribution, this number is used to ensure your payments are correctly applied to your case.

Q: Can I Test My Child for Drugs and/or Alcohol?

Yes – a parent or legal guardian can request drug and/or alcohol testing for their child. However, strict documentation is required to verify your legal authority to consent on the child’s behalf.

To proceed with testing, you must bring valid documentation that proves:

  1. Your identity, and

  2. Your legal relationship to the child

On the day of the appointment, please bring:

1. Government-issued Photo ID

(e.g. Driver’s Licence or Passport)
– To confirm your identity as the adult authorising the test.

2. Proof of Relationship to the Child

Provide at least one of the following:

  • Child’s birth certificate showing your name

  • Medicare card listing both your name and the child’s

  • Court or guardianship order if you are not the biological parent

  • Centrelink family summary or hospital discharge papers (if applicable and recent)

Note: If your name does not appear on the birth certificate or Medicare card, you must provide legal documentation demonstrating your authority (e.g. court order).

3. The Child Must Attend

The child must be present at the appointment. Random hair samples or third-party drop-offs are not accepted, as this would breach legal consent and identity verification protocols.
