Alcohol (EtG) Hair Testing

Hair alcohol testing measuring ethyl glucuronide (EtG) to assess consumption over time. A minimum 3-month window is recommended for reliable results — shorter samples can be tested but give a less dependable assessment of drinking patterns.

  • Measures EtG, a validated biomarker of actual consumption
  • Distinguishes abstinence from social and chronic drinking
  • Read against published international thresholds
  • Widely used in family law, child protection and abstinence programs
  • Analysed in Australia, never sent overseas

International guidelines recommend a minimum of 3 cm of hair for EtG analysis. Those same thresholds are set for segments of 3–6 cm, so if you need 9 or 12 months, call (03) 9380 5434 first — how a longer alcohol sample is reported changes what the result can be used to say.

Check your hair length first. Measured from the scalp along the strand, 1 cm is about a month — so 6 months needs 6 cm and 12 months needs 12 cm. If your hair is shorter, the result covers less: the length decides the period, not the window you pay for. Unsure? Call (03) 9380 5434 before ordering.

If your test relates to a legal matter, confirm the required timeframe with your solicitor first.
