How do you interpret methylamphetamine and amphetamine results in hair drug testing?

The two are connected, and reading them together is what makes the report make sense. When someone uses methylamphetamine (also called methamphetamine), the body breaks part of it down into amphetamine — so both usually appear, with the amphetamine typically around 10–20% of the methylamphetamine concentration. If methylamphetamine reads 2,000 pg/mg, amphetamine would commonly sit somewhere around 200–400 pg/mg.

That gives three readings:

  • Methylamphetamine present, with some amphetamine — this can only come from methylamphetamine use. The amphetamine is a by-product of how the body breaks it down.
  • Amphetamine alone, no methylamphetamine — most likely dexamphetamine, which is essentially the same substance under another name and may be prescribed for ADHD or narcolepsy, or obtained illicitly. It does not prove methylamphetamine use.
  • Both present — usually the amphetamine is coming from the methylamphetamine, but additional dexamphetamine use cannot be ruled out.

Can a urine test for methamphetamine be wrong?

Can Concerta show up as amphetamines or dexamphetamines in a drug test?

No. Concerta contains methylphenidate, which is a different type of stimulant and not chemically related to amphetamines or dexamphetamines. While all these medications affect the central nervous system, they have distinct chemical structures. Accredited laboratories that perform confirmatory testing using mass spectrometry (GC-MS or LC-MS/MS) can easily differentiate methylphenidate from amphetamines. This means Concerta will not test positive for amphetamines or dexamphetamines on a properly conducted forensic or court-ordered drug test. However, it’s always recommended to declare all prescribed medications on your chain-of-custody form before testing.

Can the testing distinguish from prescribed meds?

Can hair testing detect if my drink was spiked?

If someone doesn’t use drugs but suspects their drink was spiked, hair testing can help detect exposure, even weeks and months after the incident. Important: Wait 10–14 days after the suspected incident before collecting the hair sample. This allows enough time for the hair containing the substance to grow above the scalp for accurate testing. For the most accurate results, we recommend segmenting the hair sample. This means analysing sections of hair from before and after the suspected date.

It helps show a clear pattern — that the individual does not normally use drugs, and that the exposure was isolated and non-consensual. If the dose is very low, it may not always be detected. However, we use mass spectrometry, a highly sensitive and precise method with a detection threshold as low as 20 pg/mg — making it the most reliable option currently available. Can I test positive from being around cannabis smoke or handling cocaine?

In some circumstances, yes — it depends on how often the exposure happened and how concentrated it was. Two separate things can occur, and they are worth keeping apart.

Surface contamination. The drug itself can settle on the outside of the hair from smoke in the air or from handling powder. This is why the laboratory washes every sample before analysis, and why it tests for metabolites and not only the parent drug. A metabolite is what your body produces after breaking a substance down internally — it cannot be deposited on the outside of hair, so finding one is strong evidence the substance was actually taken in. Genuine absorption. The harder case is heavy, repeated exposure — a confined space with sustained smoking, for example. If enough is absorbed, your body metabolises it and deposits it in hair the same way it would after deliberate use. At that point it is a real result, and the question shifts from whether the substance is there to how it got there and how much.

What separates the two is the level detected, the ratio of parent drug to metabolite, and the pattern across a segmented sample. Occasional passive exposure and regular use look very different on those measures — but the distinction is a matter of interpretation, not something stated on the certificate. Will my prescribed medicinal cannabis show up as THC?

Yes. If the product contains delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the test will detect THC. The laboratory identifies the molecule by its mass, and prescribed THC is chemically identical to any other THC — there is no marker that distinguishes it and no test that could.

A prescription does not make the result negative. What it does is explain it. Declare the prescription on the chain-of-custody form before the sample is taken, with the product name and dose, rather than producing it after a positive result arrives — the result will be the same either way, but how it reads to a court or an employer will not be.

Can poppy seeds cause a positive drug test?

On a urine test, genuinely yes. On a hair test, no.

Poppy seeds carry traces of morphine and codeine from the plant. In controlled studies, participants eating ordinary poppy seed foods daily returned urine opiate concentrations in the thousands of nanograms per millilitre — well above common workplace cutoffs, from food alone.

The same participants' hair told a different story. Only two of ten had any quantifiable codeine at all, at 41 and 51 pg/mg against a 200 pg/mg reporting threshold. Neither would have been reported as positive. Urine catches a single recent event; hair records a sustained pattern, and trace dietary exposure never accumulates into one.

Does dyeing or bleaching my hair affect the result?

It lowers the concentration measured, but it does not usually change the answer — and it can never create a positive.

Colouring opens the cuticle so pigment can get in, and that lets some of what is inside come out. Controlled work has measured reductions of roughly 40–60% for many substances, with bleaching causing more loss than dyeing. However, a study of more than 10,000 real samples found no significant difference in the rate of positive results between treated and untreated hair: losing part of a concentration that sits well above the reporting threshold still leaves it above the threshold.

No hair product contains drugs of abuse, so routine colouring cannot cause a false accusation. Just declare it at collection. How does hair testing compare with urine and saliva testing?

Do detox shampoos work on a hair drug test?

There is no product that reliably removes a drug result from hair, and detox shampoos sold for that purpose do not achieve it. Substances are incorporated into the hair shaft as it forms, not deposited on the surface, so washing acts on the wrong part of the sample. Harsh chemical treatment — aggressive relaxers, bleaching, thermal straightening — can reduce the measured concentration of some analytes, and ethyl glucuronide for alcohol is the most vulnerable of them, but no controlled study in living people shows it dependably brings a result below the reporting threshold.

What it does do is alter the condition of the hair, which the laboratory records. A sample that appears heavily treated invites the question of why, and that question is far more damaging in a hearing than the original result would have been.

Can a hair follicle drug test be cheated or tricked?

Not reliably, and attempting it tends to make matters worse. Shaving the head does not defeat a test, because body hair can be used instead — it simply gives a less precise timeline. Substituting someone else's hair does not work either: the sample is collected by an AHPRA-registered practitioner who verifies photo identification first and seals the sample under chain-of-custody protocol, so there is no point at which the donor handles it.
