Hair testing is known for its long detection window. The standard test reaches back about 90 days, and with enough hair it can reach back 12 months. The longer answer is about what each window needs, and what you give up as it stretches.
How the window works
Hair follicle drug testing analyses a small sample cut from the scalp. When a drug is taken, the body breaks it down into metabolites that circulate in the bloodstream, and as hair forms in the follicle both the drug and its metabolites are incorporated into the growing strand and stay there. The section closest to the scalp is the most recent record.
That is also why a hair result reports both the parent drug and its metabolites: the metabolite is the part that can only have come from inside the body.
Scalp hair grows at an average of about 1 cm per month, and that rate is what converts a length of hair into a period of time. It is an average rather than a constant — individual growth runs roughly 0.7 to 1.5 cm per month, so every window below is an approximation, not a set of dates.
One more lag is worth knowing about: newly formed hair takes about 8 to 14 days to grow above the scalp where it can be cut. A hair test is a record of the past few months, not of the past few days.
The standard window: about 90 days
A standard test analyses the 3 cm closest to the root, which corresponds to roughly 90 days. It is the most commonly requested length because it balances recency against coverage, and it is what most legal and workplace processes expect.

Reaching back 12 months
Technically straightforward, with three conditions.
You need the hair. Twelve months means at least 12 cm from the scalp. Most tests use the first 3 to 6 cm, so a longer window has to be requested specifically.
It must be analysed in segments. Laboratories divide the sample — 0–3 cm, 3–6 cm, 6–9 cm and so on — and analyse each separately. A laboratory will not test 12 cm as a single sample, because individual strands grow at slightly different rates and a long single sample averages everything into one blurred figure.
Testing in 3 cm increments is the international convention, and it also prevents earlier use being diluted. If someone used heavily nine months ago but abstained since, a single long sample can soften that finding into something ambiguous. In a legal matter, that detail is often the whole point — as it is when a short period of heavy use sits inside a longer window.
The laboratory has to be equipped for it. Segmental analysis and mass spectrometry are not universal. Ours is an accredited Australian laboratory that does both.

Body hair, where scalp hair is not available
Body hair can be used, and because it grows more slowly and sheds less often it can cover a longer period — sometimes 12 months or more from a short sample.
The trade-off is precision. Body hair growth cycles are irregular, with a higher proportion of follicles dormant at any one time, so the window it represents is much less exact. As a rule of thumb, add about three months: 3 cm of body hair may represent six months rather than three. Where the question is when, rather than whether, scalp hair is the far better sample.
What a hair test cannot tell you
It cannot date use to a particular day, and it cannot state how many times a substance was taken.
What it can do is report the concentration, and concentration carries information — higher levels are generally associated with heavier or more frequent use, though a short period of heavy use inside a longer window complicates that reading. Interpreting the number is a separate exercise from measuring it, and what the levels mean sets out how it is done.
Laboratory wash protocols and metabolite reporting are what keep external contamination — second-hand smoke, handling — out of the result.
The limitations
- Treatment and breakage. Bleaching, dyeing and frequent cutting reduce the quality and length of what is available.
- Environmental exposure. Passive exposure, cannabis especially, can influence older segments if the sample is not washed and interpreted properly.
- Growth variation. The further back a segment sits, the more the individual growth rate has compounded, and the wider the real margin around its dates.
When a 12-month window is worth it
Extended detection is usually requested in serious or long-running matters:
- family court and child protection proceedings
- employment disputes turning on long-term abstinence
- criminal investigations
- probation or parole reviews
In those settings, four 3 cm segments give a quarter-by-quarter history of use or abstinence rather than a single averaged figure.
The verdict
Hair testing can go back 12 months, provided a long enough sample is available, the laboratory performs segmental analysis, and the method is sensitive and specific — LC-MS/MS or GC-MS. The comparison with urine testing is the clearest way to see why the window matters.
Whether you need 12 months is a separate question, and one worth putting to your solicitor before booking. A longer window costs more and answers a different question than the standard one.
